The same difficulties companies have in capturing their best practices are true for optimizing those practices. Six Sigma and Lean are approaches to optimizing processes, but these rely on having an effective understanding of the process which is not generally available in knowledge-centric companies. The optimization of process is both a side effect of the articulation and introspection that experts undergo in capturing their processes using our approach, and it is an active technology capability provided through the Knowledge Service Modeler.

Based on research sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Discovery Machine has developed technology that enables experts to encode “critic” models that look at other models and logs of their results in order to optimize those models for future execution. This means that models can evolve over time both through participation from experts, but also based on the data flowing through them.

Critic models can also bring outside expertise to bear on the processes. So for instance, Lean or Six Sigma consultants can provide models that effectively critique the best practices described by plant schedulers or procurement personnel. All of this can be accomplished after models have been deployed. Unlike typical software applications that require many months between releases, a deployed gear can be adapted while users remain blissfully unaware that the change has occurred.
