The term automation conjures up notions of industrial robots and assembly line production in the manufacturing industry. The idea that “knowledge work” or “knowledge services” can effectively be automated has only recently emerged as a possibility. Progress in service oriented architectures (SOA) and web services has demonstrated that this idea is desired in the marketplace, but the expense and difficulty surrounding the creation of services has prevented these ideas from reaching their potential in terms of return on investment. In the artificial intelligence community, intelligent agents and agent-based architectures have been developing in parallel to SOAs in industry. The problem with both approaches is that they require software engineers to develop small programs based on expertise. The SOA community is focused on services that, to date, are quantitative and generic, while the agent community has relied on rule-based technologies that are accessible to few and developed by still fewer. Discovery Machine’s methodology and technology can be learned quickly by knowledge coordinators within the company. By deploying the technology with trained individuals in your organization, you can effectively capture expertise and automate it in the form of training systems, job aides or software components within your applications. A deployed knowledge service model is called a knowledge service gear and can be deployed in many ways. |
